In Ayurveda, the Doshas are a functional representation of the Panchamahabhutas, or Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Jala (Water), Prithvi (Earth), and Akash (Space).
Vata is the dominant Dosha during Monsoons, representing ‘Air’ (with traces of ‘Ether’). Vata is considered the ‘leader’ Dosha, as it governs the movement of both, the Mind and the Body. Where Vata is predominant, you tend to be lively and enthusiastic, infusing Life into everything just like monsoons quench the thirst of the world after Summers.
Attributes and Manifestations of Vata
Vata is movement, flowing and changing like the air currents. It controls the activities of the nervous system and elimination of wastes from the body. An energetic and on-the-go persona is characteristic of Vata Dosha being predominant. People with a Vata-dominant Prakriti/Prakruti (Constitution) tend to have the following characteristics:
- Thin, agile frame
- Dry skin and hair; and cold hands and feet
- Bouts of energy followed by sudden periods of fatigue
- Sleep cycle is easily disturbed
- Quick to anger but quicker in forgiveness
- Chirpy, engaging and adventure-seeking
- Sensitive digestion
When Vata is in a State of Vikruti (Imbalance)
An indication of Vata imbalance may be that your Mind is constantly anxious, in a whirl; accompanied by insomnia. You find that your mind is simply not able to rest. Excessive stress may lead to unintentional weight loss or irregular digestion. A person whose Vata is in Vikruti may demonstrate:
- Nervousness and anxiety caused by constant worrying and overthinking
- Dry or chapped skin
- Sporadic sleep patterns and insomnia
- Uncharacteristic aversion to cold, strong breezes or noises
- Constipation, gas, bloating
Vata Balanced Diet and Lifestyle
Though Monsoons are a time to rejoice and celebrate the revival of Life, it can be harsh if your Vata is imbalanced. It is extremely feasible to realign your Vata and continue living life with a spring in your step. The Human Body is a sacred temple. It needs to be build step by step, securely and diligently. Therefore, instead of using short term ‘remedies’ one must incorporate routines which benefit in the long term.
For an Aggravated Vata:
- Foods that are inherently sweet, sour and salty should be consumed. A filling diet of bananas, avocados, cherries, peaches, melons, plums should be maintained. Raw vegetable such as cucumbers, sweet potatoes, beets and asparagus may be consumed in moderation
- Avoid foods that are bitter, pungent, cooling, dry or light
- Vata benefits from adhering to a fixed routine. Maintaining a proper schedule with time specifically marked for sleeping, exercising and, eating is imperative. Sleep and meals should not be compromised or missed
- Exercise routines should be dedicated to movement of the Body. The Body should be in flow while the Mind should be at peace. Yoga, walking, short hikes, and aerobics prove to be very beneficial
- Protect yourself from nippy winds
- Warm, pastel colours should be favoured in clothing and environment
- Sweet, earthy and warm aromas such as Lavender, Cinnamon, Pine, Sage and Vanilla can help combat restlessness
Vata- imbalanced skin is generally dry and prone to flaking.
