Soaps are too harsh and stripping, as are a lot of shampoos. We must use a mild shampoo, one which will not strip our scalp of its natural oils entirely.

As for conditioning, simply washing the hair with shampoo will not do, a good conditioner should be applied on 3/4th of the hair (avoiding the scalp).
