The power of walking and its benefits

The importance of walking

One of the central pillars of wellness according to Ayurveda is movement. It’s a foundational part of health, of our body, mind and spirit. Walking is one of the easiest forms of movement. It’s free, requires minimal exertion, is available to almost all of us and is simple to slot into a busy lifestyle. Walking can be a form of transport to and from work or other hobbies, an activity to share with others or a mindful practice to enjoy alone. There are also countless health benefits of walking.

Fresh air and nature

Walking encourages you to get outside. Breathing fresh air is vital for overall health; it oxygenates the blood, which improves energy levels, brain function and immunity. Spending time in nature can also relieve stress, enhance creativity, relax the mind and nourish the soul. From an Ayurvedic perspective, connecting with nature is a way to balance the five elements of space, air, fire, water and earth, which exist both outside and within us. For additional benefits, take off your shoes to get in direct contact with the earth and let the ground massage your feet’s marma points.

Improved circulation

The motion of walking causes the heart to pump blood around the body, delivering oxygen to your working muscles and taking blood from the legs back to the heart. This encourages optimal circulation and serves to nourish your body’s cells and organs. While blood has the heart to pump it, your lymphatic system needs movement to help it circulate. Walking stimulates the flow of lymphatic fluid, which supports the immune system and healthy detoxification.

Increased fitness

Walking is a cardiovascular exercise, albeit a gentle one, that boosts the metabolism and strengthens the heart. Walking burns significant calories, which can help in maintaining a healthy bodyweight. Regular walking can enhance lung capacity, immunity and cardiovascular health, leading to increased longevity and a longer ‘health-span’, the length of your life that you are in good health.

Bone and joint health

As we age, our bones can weaken and our joints can suffer from wear and tear. Walking lubricates and protects the joints by stimulating the release of synovial fluid, which provides a cushioning layer between the bones. Walking also improves skeletal health by increasing bone density and muscle tone, reducing the risk of injury, fracture and osteoporosis and strengthening the joints.

Mental health and mood

Walking is slow, repetitive and meditative. It can act as a kind of moving meditation, helping to relieve stress, shift anxious thoughts and improve mood. The very act of moving your body helps to bring your attention to the present moment, which can interrupt a negative thought spiral. While walking, the brain also receives more oxygen and nutrients. This optimises cognitive function, boosts energy levels and increases mental clarity, showing the importance of walking for the health of the brain as well as the body. Try a mindful walking meditation by resting your attention on the rhythmic feeling of your feet upon the ground, and feel your body, mind and soul relax.
