The Ayurvedic Glossary 

As a centuries-strong practice, the vocabulary of Ayurveda is derived from the Indian Sanskrit language that dates back over 5000 years. Explore the medicinal herbs, healing recipes, massage therapies and philosophies that define world of Ayurveda, and make our products what they are.

Beautyberry  Also known as Callicarpa. Powerful antioxidant which boosts skin radiance and calms skin. Found in our Urjasara collection.

 

Bhringaraj  False Daisy, also known as the ‘King of Hair’. Medicinal herb which orgionates from the sunflower family. The most celebrated benefit of Bringaraj is its abilty to promotes hair growth and prevent hair loss. Found in our Bringadi hair care collection.

 

Bringadi  “False Daisy and more” (bring: Bhringaraj, adi: etc.). The name of our Bringadi hair care collection.

Chameli   Jasmine. Delicate flower not only known for its beautiful fragrance but for its anti-bacterial and healing properties. It is a powerful antioxidant, helping to protect skin and calm inflammation. Found in our Rose & Jasmine collection.

Gotu Kola  Centella Asiatica, also known as Frog’s Leaf. A herbaceous perennial plant which dates back thousands of years.Gotu Kola is renowned for its numerous skin benefits such as wound healing, soothing redness and rejuvenating skin. Found in our Amarrupa face care collection.

 


 

Jambira Sweda  A post-massage treatment that helps eliminate toxins via heated bags placed over the body 

 


Kansa Also known as bell-metal, Kansa is an alloy made from copper & tin which is known in Ayurveda for its health benefits 

 

Kansa Wand  A bell-shaped face and body massage tool crafted from a prized combination of copper and tin (Kansa: Bell metal, a type of bronze made using copper & tin) 

 

Kamala  Sacred Lotus. Soothes irritation and redness. Found in our Kumkumadi collection.

Shiro  Head 

 

Shiroabhyanga  Head massage 

 

Shigru  Moringa. Powerful herb which has both antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and is great at reducing inflammation and calming skin.

 

Sugandhadi   “A thousand exquisite scents” (su: positive superlative, gandha: scent, adi: etc.) 

 


 

Tailam  Sesame Oil, a traditional base for Ayurvedic oil recipes 

 


 

Udvartana  A treatment in which a specially prepared herbal paste or powder is massaged over the body to support detoxification, balance and physical health

Vata  One of the three dosha profiles. Related to energetic, creative, lively characteristics and associated with autumn season. 

 

Vrakuti  “After creation” (vi: after, kruti: creation) 

 

Vidya  A practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine 

 

Shirodhara  A therapeutic procedure involving the pouring or dripping of oils onto the forehead to promote relaxation, awareness and balance 

 


 

Yashtimadhu  Licorice. Tones and firms the skin. Found in our Sugandhadi collection.
