Ayurvedic Seasons

As people, our connection with the earth means that naturally, we move in rhythm with the seasons. Taking their names from Sanskrit, the Ayurvedic seasons are linked with the three doshas: Vata, Kapha and Pitta. By taking each season as it comes and adapting our individual needs accordingly, we can find the key to year-round wellness.

Sharad:

The Autumn Season

The Ayurvedic autumn season is a time to start afresh; to soothe, calm and ground ourselves amid the clear skies and warm tones of the landscape. With this season also comes a message of abundance – rest, hydrate and nourish, and your energy will return twofold. We can all embrace {sharad} season with a recharging and re-energising bedtime ritual of reading, mindful breathing, and conscious relaxation.

Vatas can seek skin hydration in mild cleansers that keep natural oils in balance, while Pittas can seek out natural, plant-based products to keep their sensitive skin soothed. For Kaphas, gentle exfoliation or a clay face mask will lead oily skin to equilibrium.

Hemanta:

The Winter Season

The Ayurvedic season of {hemanta} falls between late autumn and early winter. As the sun wanes and the air cools, the season falls into a natural slumber, presenting us with the perfect moment to prioritise sleep rituals, tranquility and protection.

This season, we prevent our precious reserves from being stolen by the cold, safeguarding the skin barrier with moisture and nutrients. Healing {thailam} oils will nurture all doshas’ skin and senses, supporting Kapha’s natural harmony with the season, and soothing restlessness in Vata and Pitta.

Vasanta:

The Spring Season

As late winter turns to spring, Kapha season begins. While the atmosphere is clear, cool and dewy, it’s the perfect time to detoxify, refresh and renew. Detox regimes like intermittent forms of fasting, a gut reset, or Ayurvedic therapies to deep-cleanse the body and mind will help us all to harmonise with the season.

For Kaphas, it’s a time to pay extra attention to movement, foods and skin care that grounds and calms like deep cleansers and herbal scrubs. Vatas can focus on hydrating face masks to quench skin parched by {vasanta}, and Pitta’s cold-weather skin sensitivity can be soothed with light cooling creams and lotions.

Grishma:
The Summer Season

Swimming with Pitta’s fiery intensity, the heat of Ayurvedic summer is the energetic peak of the year. During {grishma}, to remain grounded, we temper this fire with an abundance of cooling, calming hydration, while minimising salty, spicy and sour foods.

At this time of year, Pittas can counteract flustered, hot, and bothered skin with a cooling, calming gel moisturiser. Vatas, affected by the dryness of the season, will thrive with a hydrating serum to lock in moisture; while Kaphas can treat heat-induced oiliness with an exfoliator that purifies the pores and allows skin to breathe.
