What is Ayurvedic beauty?

Ayurvedic beauty

Ayurvedic beauty is a holistic therapy that goes beyond treating issues as and when they occur. It is a way of treating the inside and the outside, by fully understanding how everything in the body, mind and spirit connects and works in beautiful harmony.

The roots of Ayurvedic beauty are deeply embedded in Ayurvedic medicine, a holistic medical system that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. Believed by some to be the oldest healing science in the world, Ayurveda is based on the principle that optimum health and wellness are built on a delicate balance between mind, body and spirit.

The key to Ayurvedic beauty is balancing the doshas, or energies: vata (wind), pitta (fire) and kapha (water and earth). For example, skin with vata tendencies is often dry, rough skin that tends to wrinkle requires regular moisturising and nourishing; skin with pitta tendencies, which is often oily skin that can be prone to acne, needs to be calmed and soothed, while kapha skin, which can be oily and prone to water retention, can benefit from exfoliation.

Ayurvedic skincare

The hero constituents of Ayurvedic skincare include nourishing, natural ingredients ranging from sacred lotus and saffron to ashwagandha and turmeric – products that have been harvested from nature and used for centuries. But Ayurvedic beauty relies on more than just ingredients alone; Ayurvedic treatments can be used to nourish both skin and hair in sensorial experiences that connect in a far deeper way to the rest of the body and mind than just dabbing on moisturiser in the mornings

Ayurvedic treatments

Along with the key ingredients that make up Ayurvedic beauty, it is the way that we apply them, through time-honoured treatments that provide the transformative Ayurvedic beauty experience, working on the inner and outer beauty of the body.

Massage is key amongst them, such as Abhyanga, a full-body warm oil massage. This massage differs slightly from a regular body massage in that there is focus on the skin as well as the muscles. For Kama Ayurveda, the Abhyanga signature massage with Sugandhadi Massaging Body Oil uses changes in pressure and movements based on the doshas.

For the face, marma point massage therapy involves stimulating the marma points (or vitality points) in both the face and body, to improve blood circulation, release tension and stress, treat the skin, as well as improve the flow of energy through the body. It is especially useful to use a Kansa Wand, a beautiful Ayurvedic beauty massage tool.

Ayurvedic wisdom

Because of its connection to Ayurvedic medicine, Ayurvedic beauty is a way of addressing outward concerns with an approach that involves the full body and mind, by stimulating and balancing energy points throughout the body. Because as those who possess the wisdom of Ayurvedic learnings know, beauty is much more than skin deep.
