Benefits of self-massage
In Ayurveda, massage therapy {abhyanga} is used to stimulate lymphatic drainage, clear energetic pathways and encourage blood flow. This improves detoxification processes, promotes healing and decreases pain, stress and muscle tension. While massage offers clear physical benefits, attention is also paid to the balancing the energy centres of the body. Breath, mindfulness and intention are key. Regular professional massages can be impractical and expensive; self-massage offers a substantially beneficial alternative. While you may not have the expertise of a professional masseuse, you know your own body and can adjust your touch according to your needs in each moment. Self-massage is also an opportunity to slow down and engage mindfully in an act of self-care.
How to self-massage
While tennis balls, foam rollers or massage guns can allow your body to relax into a more passive massage, using just your hands is simple, equipment-free and can be done from almost anywhere. It also incorporates that element of self-touch, providing more opportunity for mindful exploration and a deeper connection with the self.

Our massage tips
- Start by relaxing your body and taking a few deep breaths.
- Gently massage the area, such as the neck, shoulders or thighs, moving in circular motions across the whole muscle. Notice your body’s response and sensations.
- Locate areas of sensitivity or tension and apply more pressure here, still moving in circular motions. Continue for 3-5 minutes per area, breathing deeply all the while.
- Use our Kama Ayurveda Sugandhadi Massaging Body Oil with relaxing and reviving aromas and rāga music to encourage further healing and relaxation.
- Explore your marmas (energetic points around the body) to balance your internal organs and revitalise your energy flow.
