Ayurvedic nutrition tips for your everyday life

Nutrition tips according to Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, diet and food are a vital part of dinacharya: your daily lifestyle and routines. Most illnesses come from poor digestive fire therefore good nutrition is key to staying healthy. A regular routine will help to balance doshas, aid sleep and digestion, and contribute to overall longevity. Integrating a few simple actions around eating habits and nutrition and some ayurvedic recipes can bring more balance and wellbeing into your life.

Eat at consistent times

This allows your digestive system to be prepared to work! Aim to eat breakfast 1-2 hours after you rise. Do not eat immediately, and start the day with warm water to cleanse your system. Lunch should be approximately in the middle of the day and dinner at least two hours before bed.

Follow a diet that pacifies your imbalances

Most ailments are caused by consuming foods that imbalance our natural dosha. To alleviate this you should focus on a diet that pacifies the dosha that has been aggravated or vitiated.

Focus on whole foods

Aim to eat a diet rich in natural whole foods (known as sattvic foods) that have come direct from the planet and are not processed such as grains, pulses, fruits and vegetables. These provide the greatest nourishment and result in enhanced immunity. Look for ayurvedic recipes that are full of whole foods.

Consume all six tastes

Ayurveda recognises salty, sweet, sour, bitter, pungent and astringent as the six tastes and a balanced meal will contain all six of these to aid optimum digestion.

Eat only when hungry

Your body knows when it is truly hungry so tune in and listen to it. Stop when you are satiated, ideally when your stomach is three-quarters full.

Eat slowly

Be present and mindful when you eat, taking time over every bite and chew slowly. To help, send intentions of gratitude to those that enabled the food to get on your plate.

You can start training your mindful eating with our latest Ayurvedic recipes.
